During the long "Soviet twilight" of the Russian Orthodox Church, one bright light that remained in the area of liturgical singing was the choir of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery, under the direction of the indefatigable Fr. Archimantrite Matfey Mormyl'. Steadfastly committed to maintaining the legacy of the early 20th-century "Moscow School", Archimandrite Matfey arranged numerous works by Kastalsky, Chesnokov, and others for the monastic choir, harmonized chants himself, and gave premier performances of compositions and arrangements by Dcn. Sergius Trubachov. Loading the monks onto busses in the middle of the night, so they could record in the fine acoustics of the Moscow Conservatory, he made numerous recordings (initially available only in the West) and then, when circumstances permitted, took the monastery choir on tour to Western European capitals. This CD pays tribute to the remarkable legacy of this choir in excerpts from recordings made between 1978 and 1987. A unique sound document, not to be missed!--V.M.
